Flying Gives You a Unique View of the World
12 Oct 2025

Flying gives you a unique view of the world — one that constantly reminds you of both its scale and its detail.
Early this morning, returning overnight from Toronto, we crossed the west coast of Ireland at 39,000 feet. Below us stretched a vast carpet of low cloud rolling eastward towards the UK, dense and unbroken except where dark hilltops pushed through like islands.
At first glance it looked like a frozen landscape — snow and ice on a white sea.
I once flew a CAT II approach into Dublin in similar conditions. It was a monitored approach — I flew entirely on instruments while the captain looked out for visual reference.
At 100 feet — the decision height — came the call: “Go around.” I executed the missed approach and glanced outside. What I saw was surreal: a pure white blanket stretching to the horizon, pierced only by the occasional tree or church steeple reaching for the light.
Pilots often see the familiar from a completely different perspective — and that’s part of the privilege.
It’s a reminder that perspective changes everything. Whether you’re at 100 feet or 39,000, how you view the world shapes the decisions you make and the calm you bring.
